Home made art

Tanya List

I always loved art.  Always wanted art. …..but could really never afford to buy the pieces that i loved.  So, about 6 years ago i marched down to the art shop and purchased the largest canvas they had:)  I stared at it for almost a year before i had the guts to paint it.  Now it’s become an obsession.  I love the instant gratification that you get from seeing the colour become something a little more:)  Below are just a few painting and other random “home-made art” that i hung on the walls today (trust me, i have waaayyy more paintings….ry laughs that we don’t really need to paint the walls anymore…)

This was made from left over grass cloth for the background and tiles from our old bathroom in Etobicoke….i loved those tiles…so granny.  Please excuse the nasty counter tops in the left hand corner…one day they will be changed:

Welcome home to our coffee table

Tanya List

This plane prop table is not a new piece for ry and i.  Once our little lady was learning to walk, we put it away in storage for fear of her knocking her teeth out on it:)  Now that she is older IT’S BACK….yyyaaaa!

Ry acquired this prop when he was working as a pilot/plane mechanic up in Yellowknife.  Everyone thinks that ry bent the prop to make it “curl” like it is, but it was actually in a plane crash on the ice runway (no injuries) and this is the result.  Yup, pretty darn cool i must say.  I can’t take any credit for it though, this is all ry.  He got a piece of glass cut for it (tempered and bevelled) and used a wing bolt to hold it all together.  This table weighs a ton….maybe two:)

plane prop $free + glass 800= coolest coffee table out there.

A nod to my granny:)

Tanya List

Now that we are living on the water, i decided that the house needed a few beach elements (p.s still loving for a surfboard).
As a kid i remember my grandma List having many mirrors, frames, furniture ect all covered in seashells ……i was obsessed with them back then and apparently still now:) Since meeting Ry we have been on a few vacations together, all along the way collecting shells from different beaches.  Lets just say that i had a “small” collection that i have been carting around for a few years now.  When we moved into the new house i found them….then also found a mirror that again i’ve had for years (it was collecting dust in the garage) never loved it, it was just really cheap at a garage sale so i bought it.  This project is a collaboration of the 2 combined……….might be my favourite piece yet!!!

Miss Reid’s room…80% done:)

Tanya List

When it comes to most things in life, it takes a team to get things done.  This project was no exception.  I would first like to thank Grandma List (greatest mom ever) for being my assistant, helped wallpaper (tons of experience…..remember the 80’s??!!), taking care of Reid, sewing flowers, pillows(pictured is only half the amount), trim for curtains, lunch, snacks, u name it, she helped.  Also sista Kelly for coming and taking care of Reid for many, many hours and teaching Reid how to do ring around the rosie with chuckles (the dog).   Also….Lisa Masotti (one of my besties) for giving Reid the most beautiful antique bed!!!!!!  She absolutely loves it, even plays in it.  Hubby Ry modified it with some bed rails so she doesn’t roll right out:)

Here are a few shots of what we were all up to this past week (professional shots to come):

Kitchen hardware=i love lee valley

Tanya List

Well the kitchen cabinets are 95% done.  Still waiting for the rest of the hardware to be shipped to the house from Lee Valley.  For now here is a sneak peak at the hardware i choose.  Kind-of-in-love with them:)  For those that know me…i don’t do silver or stainless…not sure why, but i’ve always had a love for the gold.  So, when choosing the new handles i picked out an antique brass, $5.10 each from Lee Valley, a little more than the average home depo, but in my opinion, totally worth it:).

Now all we need is to get a new counter top….Ry says we have to wait till spring…..I’m not so sure about that:)!!!!

Muskoka renos:)

Tanya List

Well, i’m officially back and ready to show off some of our renos!!!  Ry and i have been ridiculously busy painting (yup i would say the cabinets alone took  80-90 hours, hanging curtains, ripping up our yard 150 feet to the water (long story),  painting lite fixtures….many of them…..and of course drinking wine and looking out onto our amazing view the Muskoka river:) Here is the first of many to come:

Tanya List

I just picked it up, the newest holiday issue from chatelaine magazine.  Featured in the story “12 days of christmas decorating” is tanya list design (page 28).  I’ve whipped up some floral arrangements that i would totally put on my own table.  These little gems are arranged in some of my fave containers of the moment milk glass, vintage bottles and even my grannies soup tureen:).

Also check out one of my besties sabrina linn (page 30).  And a fantastic design story on cute fellow florist alison westlake (coriander girl) (page 34-39).

Painting my ass off…:)

Tanya List

We are officially home:)  yyyaaa!  I couldn’t be more excited.  When i look from any window on the main floor i can see the water…… we really do own a little piece of heaven.  Heaven however needed a heck of a lot of painting.  The previous owners had very different taste than myself.  All the cabinets were dark, walls different (not so complimentary colours), and the whole house was lacking in some serious character.  Ry and i have already thrown ourselves into reno mode.  I painted the walls, trim and the dark cherry wood cabinets-all white.  Ry then lined the ceiling with wood planks and added some much needed character with some crown moulding though out the dinning, kitchen and living room. ……i then did some more painting it all white:)  NO WORRIES, there will be TONS of colour in the decor items!!!  Here are just a few pics amongst the reno:

Bye bye Toronto…..Heeellloooooo Muskoka

Tanya List

Well I’ve been living in the city of Toronto for the last 13 years.  Wow…..can’t believe it….i think that officially makes me a touch older:)   To all of those people who have made me laugh while drinking too much wine, i just wanted to say thanks and i hope we all keep in touch:)

Ry, Reid and I are moving on to what hopefully (after a massive amount of renos) will be our forever dream home.  I can’t begin to tell you how amazing it feels. Don’t worry….tons of reno pics to come!!!  yyaaaaa.  BUT, for now, here are some pics of the  living room renos we did in our Toronto home.

A few tears fell as i drove away today.  Some very beautiful memories were created in that house.  It was the first house i ever called a home after leaving my parents so many years ago………
